“Santa Cruz Sunset” 12×36

Oh I know….it has been a long, long time since I did a post for painting of the month. But here I find myself with some time on my hands so why not. And yes, I am aware that it is almost June…

I’ve said before I enjoy painting sunsets, but I may have failed to mention that Santa Cruz has some of the best sunsets. Something I learned during my time at UCSC.

This painting currently hangs in my family room so I can enjoy it. I swear, every time I look at it I notice something new.

This was part of six different 12×36 canvas experiments involving pretty much everything I could get my hands on…

The background started with a mix of spray paints (I prefer liquitex and montana spray cans). Then came some basic acrylic additions. Then ink. Enough of it to really float around the center there. I added vitrail paint to the fluidity. The vitrail behaves differently depending on the color. The trick over time is remembering which color performs which way in each circumstance. But again, when it dries, I just love that thick, hard candy coat look it gives.

I didn’t use any particular image of sunsets to base this off of. But just an overall memory of walking along the beach at sunset. The bright lights of the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk. All the color and sound that floats in the air with crashing waves.

This one is still available in the shop.
